How To Stop Your Stomach Bloating Up

by Greg Hollings

Do you find that certain foods tends to bloat your stomach, leaving you with an uncomfortable puffy feeling that sometimes requires you to undo your button after you eat?

That horrible sensation is caused by the foods you’re choosing and certain aspects of your lifestyle…the tendency to gulp down breakfast before running to catch the train to work in the morning; or squeezing in a sandwich for lunch just before an important meeting - these habits invariably mean that we’re in a state of stress when we swallow our food.

Sitting down to eat your meals in a nice and relaxed environment where you can take the time to chew your food properly and enjoy some peace and quiet is one change you can incorporate, that will help improve digestion your digestive help.

Avoiding certain foods that inflame your gut - which can cause excessive gas - is another.

Here are 5 foods to avoid if you want to get rid of that bloated, full and gassy feeling…

1. Wheat/Flour - This means bread, pastries and pasta are on the banned list for a while. Try some spelt bread and rice pasta as an alternative.

2. Cow’s Milk - Feel bloated after a latte or cappucino? If so, chances are that you’re intolerant to cow’s milk. Try goat’s milk instead.

3. Pizza - This is made with a wheat base, which can cause all sorts of intestinal complaints.

4. Beer - I find it really gassy sometimes and it’s full of sugar. Not a good combination when trying to avoid bloating.

5. Sugar - Not only does this lower your immune system significantly for a period of time after eating it but too much sugar can cause an overgrowth in candida. Candida is a bacteria that can cause excessive gas and bloating.

Three of the foods mentioned above contain gluten, which can cause a great deal of bloating for many people. Not only is it found in these foods it is also used as a filler in many ready made sauces, potato chips and sweets. It’s worth taking a good look at the ingredients lists of all the products you buy to see if they contain gluten.

Bloating is, at worst, deeply uncomfortable and the causes of it can impact your long term health.  At best, it is frustrating; it can ruin your flat stomach within a matter of minutes.

Avoiding certain foods and taking your time to eat your meals properly will help not only prevent bloating but you may also experience the added benefits such as feeling a lot more energetic, improving your skin quality and experiencing weight loss or weight normalisation.

  2. I totally agree with your advice, I have suffered from IBS for many years and some of the above certainly give me a bloated stomach.
One thing that helps me is peppermint tablets by a company called Mintec, along with Acidophilus and 100mg of Pectin.
Taken together, and avoid some of the above have changed my life.
    Regards.

  3. Hi Jsanderz,

Thanks for your comment. In addition to what I’ve mentioned in my post, something I find particularly helpful to deal with IBS is metabolic typing. If you haven’t already, it’s worth reading Katrina Eden’s post. I’m glad you’ve overcome what can be a debilitating condition.

  4. Hi

For the last month i have experienced bloating to the point where I am unable to eat in the day as I feel sick and then I can finally eat at approx. 6pm. As soon as I have eaten I get bloated again. I am unable to wear my normal clothes as they are all too tight. I am a vegetarian and my diet consists of vegetables such as steamed brocolli and carrots and plenty of grilled fish including salmon and mackerel. I have just started having acidophilus 30 billion, and for breakfast I have Porridge Oats and add flaxseed. I am still bloated all day though!
